Our Choose & Cut Days and Hours are the Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays between Thanksgiving and Christmas from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
THE STOWELL DIFFERENCE
We have a 321 acre hill farm in Central Vermont. Over 50 acres of that is an active Christmas tree Farm in Brookfield, Vermont We raise and sell a variety of species of Christmas trees and greens. We sell our trees and greens in two different ways: Wholesale and Retail (Choose and Cut). We grow our trees almost organically. We use commercial fertilizer but we mow the grass and weeds around the trees. We leave the mowed grass and weeds to rot and provide nutrients to the trees. We are conducting a trial use of wood chips around newly planted trees. So far it seems to be supressing the grass and weeds and providing moisure to the roots of the trees. We don't use pesticides except in extreme pest outbreaks. We have not had an extreme out break in many years and hope not to have any in the future. We plant special cover crops before planting a new block of Christmas trees to improve the soil.. We shear or shape our trees in a more natural way to have a full tree but not an artificially tight shape. We want there to be places for customers to hang ornaments and other decorations. Consequently the Christmas trees look more natural.
WHOLESALE CHRISTMAS TREES:
We plant more trees annually than we expect to harvest in a single future year because we don't know how many will survive and be marketable. Typically that means we have 200 to 400 to sell wholesale. We prefer to sell to several small customers rather than to just one bigger customer. We sell wholesale Christmas trees to retailers and greens to people who make wreaths, garlands, grave blankets, etc. Our wholesale trees minmum order is 50 trees and our wholesale holiday greens minimum order is 20 fifty pound bundles.
RETAIL CHRISTMAS TREES (Choose & Cut):
Families and individuals come to our farm after Thanksgiving to choose one or more trees. Members of our staff cut, transport to our balers to package the tree and if necessary, help the customer attach it safely on their vehicle. We also have a large supply of decorated and undecorated wreaths to sell. Each harvest season we select one or more blocks that are nearly depleted of trees and cut them on a daily basis for our pre-cut racks. This provides some customers the option of not treking out in the fields that may be cold, wet or windy and pick their Christmas tree quickly. Typically these trees are at a discounted price to enable us to ensure that the blocks are cleared of all marketable trees.
THE EXPERIENCE AT THE STOWELL CHRISTMAS TREE FARM:
We strive very hard to make this a very pleasant and memorable holiday experience that includes the purchase of one or more very nice Christmas trees and related products at reasonable prices. Some of the other ingredients include a pleasant drive on picturesque country roads, a safari through our scenic Christmas tree fields in search of the "perfect" Christmas tree, warming up near the wood furnace in our Christmas barn, relaxing with food and hot drinks at the non-profit organization bake sale, browsing through the wreaths, greens, maple products, and tree accessories, viewing the display of antique equipment and watching our live electric train display layout. This is designed to be fun not work for the customer. Our customers range from individuals, to large families with multiple generations coming to our farm. Some of our customers have been coming since we opened our Choose & Cut in 1972'. Each member of the group may have different high points in this adventure. There is a lot more going on here besides just the purchase of a "perfect" Christmas tree.
OUR STAFF:
One of the things that bring our customers back year after year is our friendly and hard working staff. Most of them have been with us for years. They either hold full time jobs or are high school or college students during the week. They work with us on school holidays and weekends. Most of them have worked many or all of the many phases of Christmas tree farm work during the year such as soil preparation, planting, fertilization, shaping and at least two harvests. They truely look forward to helping you have a fun and successful experience choosing the perfect tree for you and your family.
